Our Program

Girls on the Run® (GOTR)  is an after school program for third through fifth grade girls that uses the power of exercise and positive mentoring to "prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living."  Through interactive activities, running, playing games, and discussing important issues, girls learn how to celebrate being girls. The program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health.

GOTR meets after school twice a week for ten weeks.  Girls are coached by women volunteers from our community who serve as healthy role models.  Girls are taught specific life lessons such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer pressure and making healthy decision.  At the end of the program each girl has a goal to complete a non-competitive 5 K run/walk event.

During the ten week program, girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, contented and self-confident young women.

The girls will meet for an hour and fifteen minutes twice a week for ten weeks, for a total of 21 lessons.  At the end of the season the girls have worked up to and complete a community 5 K event to celebrate their accomplishments throughout the season.  Upon completion of the program, the girls have learned lessons that apply to real life and have a set of "tools" to deal with peer pressure and other uncomfortable situations so they can live their lives according to their own values.

Curriculum

Girls on the Run® offers unique programs for different age groups.  The "Girls on the Run" curriculum was developed specifically for 3rd - 5th graders while the "Girls on Track" curriculum was created to address issues affecting 6th - 8th graders. The underlying principles are the same but "Girls on Track" goes into more depth on the topics. Lesson topics include: healthy relationships; avoidance of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol; personal safety; media basics, and more.  The curriculum encompasses the following three concepts:

Weeks 1-4: All about me - getting to know who I am and what I stand for

Weeks 5-8: Building my team - understanding the importance of cooperation

Weeks 9-10: Community begins with me - learning about community and designing our own community project.

Each session focuses on a particular theme, such as "valuing what's really important," "learning to listen," and "standing up for myself."  Sessions are structured as follows:

Each session begins with a warm-up activity that introduces the girls to the day's topic.
The warm-up is followed by a stretching routine that allows for a topic-related question and answer dialogue.
During the workout period, the girls participate in a variety of running activities that utilize a game or a team goal.
Afterwards , cool-down stretching is combined with a review and discussion of the day's lesson that encourages participant questions.
Each session closes with positive words from the girls' coaches regarding individual and group behaviors.

As the final element of the program, girls participate in a 5K community run.
